HIS NAME IS BUCK... AND DEATH SHALL FOLLOW

Real quick rundown...

BUCK ROGERS: BADASS PILOT

JASON VOORHEES: SILENT BUT DEADLY

THANOS OF TITAN: MAD MASTERMIND

PLASTIC MAN and STUPEFYIN' JONES

In an effort to continue to cleans my desktop of sketch files, here are two more...

First up is Plastic Man, one of many heroes "adopted" by DC comics--the guy's like a walking, talking piece of silly putty--fun to draw, too.
(Click to stretch)

Stupefyin' Jones was Julie Newmar's ticket to stardom when she appeared as the ineffable lady whose looks could stop any man in his tracks.  From the Li'l Abner comic strip, the character never said a word--and didn't really need to.

THE FEMBOT and the FICTIONAL FEMALE FINN

This here is LADYTRON...
a cyborg created for the WildCATS comic book series, she's a kind of psychotic teenage girl who lost the majority of her original body and happened to be lucky enough to have what was left shoved into a mechanical body built only for mayhem and murder.

Fionna is a fictional character created by an ice king as a female version of an actual male character by the name of Finn.  This all takes place in the world of ADVENTURE TIME, which I've yet to fully grasp as I've only seen two episodes.  I forget the name of her fictional cat, which is, again, a female version of a male dog.  This Ice King has issues, methinks.

ON THE CASE

I've always loved the British import television series, The Avengers, and when I found out they were going to rerelease the Steed & Peel episodes on DVD again, I immediately felt the need to draw the two together again.  My likenesses are crap, but the gist of the two characters are still there and that counts for something, I'm sure.

SWAMP ZOMBIE

Every now and then, I get the urge to take another trip down to the swamp and draw one of the muck monsters that like to lurk down there.  Always freeing to draw and always fun, Man-Thing here has it all--big muscles, alluring eyes, a tall build and a mysterious silence.

This zombie is based on the models of zombies from the PLANTS vs. ZOMBIES game.

TONGUE IN CHEEK & STIFF UPPER LIP

Batroc the Leaper gets paid--fun to draw and, I'd wager, even more fun to write.

Judge Dredd comes in at the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to characters--deadly earnest and without even an iota of a sense of humor.

SIX MORE PRE-SEPTEMBER SKETCHES

I was a big fan of the cartoon DUNGEONS & DRAGONS when I was a kid and so I've been occasionally sprinkling in the characters from it in the DSC for my own pleasure.  The thing is, I've never drawn these fellas before, so it's kind of fun to finally interpret them in my own style, even if it is only in brief sketches.
Here we have Diana, the Acrobat.  A bit impulsive, but a solid leader in the group.  Her magic item was a staff.
Give her a click for a closer look.

I didn't love the look of Catwoman once Darwin Cooke and Ed Brubaker got ahold of her, but it quickly grew on me.  Occasionally I'll see if I can take it out for a spin.  Certainly, her comics were never more compelling than when Brubaker inserted the Black Mask.

Probably the sketchiest of these sketches is Elektra, who I normally have a better hold of when it comes to portraying her.  Not this time, regardless of the fact that the pose is great, as I have screwed up her proportions a bit.  Still, the pose is neat and that is what I'll take away from it.
If you dare to touch Ms. Natchios, do so with care to view her more up close and personal.

Probably my first portrayal of Kang in pencil as, in the past, he'd never been a favorite.  His uniform is quite complicated and I'm pretty sure I didn't quite get his block-head blocky enough, but it's a solid first effort.  The pose was challenging too, which always makes one of these things more interesting.
Dare to lay cursor on Kang at your own risk for an embiggened look at the world conqueror!

In my last sketch selection, I neglected to post this final piece I outlined for River Tam, the strange teen from SERENITY and FIREFLY.  Joss' little cat-like character is literally on a duct somewhere in the ship, which is common enough for her.
Click to get a bigger look at her, just hope she doesn't have one of her violent episodes when you do!

TORPEDO, I believe, is a Spanish comic drawn by one Jordi Bernet, a brilliant artist in the best Toth style, with all the traits of a Kubert and even hints of Buscema.  It's about a hit man who does just that.

SIX SKETCHY SCHEMES

Wanted to put River Tam in an action pose in these two sketches, but in the first one she seems a little too zen and medicated.  I like the pose, not necessarily the weapons, but it has a good sense of movement frozen, so that's something.
Anyway, click on it for enlargement purposes,
otherwise keep your cursor to yourselves!

This second one had the weirdness about River correct, but there wasn't enough baddie interaction and all of her fury directed at one person wouldn't suffice.  Again, not a bad sense of angelic danger moving around athletically...
Click her for a closer look...

Here we have an example of when a sketch goes as planned and comes out the other end looking
better than I'd planned it.  My first attempt at drawing the Vulture felt right!
Click to enjoy bigger baldness, oldie attitude, and that freshly applied coat of Ben Gay!

Marv being Marv, protecting Katie from the hard-core element, even though he's well beyond the hardest of any guy to ever visit the bar.  Really wanted to get the light and dark right on this one and I think it works as a panel pretty well.
Click it for an enhanced look at the shading and the magic place Marv's left arm disappears to.

Ol' Steeljack from Kurt Busiek's ASTRO CITY sure was fun to draw and I think it showed in this sketch of the guy.  Metal skin and the looks of Robert Mitchum and you have this guy down.
Ended up creating a scene in which a mother and child are being saved from a fire.
Click for a closer look at this inferno of sketchery!

Sometimes you force a not-so-good layout to work, when it would be best to leave things as they are and move on to the next attempt.  That's what should've been done below, with Thundra.
I do like how the lower half of her body came out, but the upper needs work.

That concludes this session of sketchbook scans, in my attempt to move things that have been piling up on my desktop here on the computer... until then, think about what you did!
